Marcus Thompson, 28, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for an early morning carjacking last summer that resulted with him being shot by his would-be victim, who was carrying his own weapon and took matters into his own hands, authorities say.
According to court documents, at around 6 a.m. on July 17, 2023, Thompson admitted that he approached his victim armed with a handgun, which he put to his back as he was taking items out of his vehicle in the 2300 block of R Street NE, demanding car keys.
The victim - who officials made note had a concealed carry permit - fearing for his life, turned, and shot Thompson once in self-defense. He then called 911 and provided first aid to the carjacker's non-fatal wound.
Members of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, where a gun was recovered from Thompson, who was treated by paramedics.
In November 2023, Thompson pleaded guilty in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
